What to Expect During Your Facial

Every facial is shaped around you. The exact flow shifts with your skin and how you're feeling that day, but most sessions move gently through these moments of care.

Skin Consultation

We start with a calm, unhurried conversation about your skin, lifestyle, and what you'd like your skin to feel like leaving the room.

Gentle Cleansing & Skin Analysis

A double cleanse followed by a closer look at your skin so the rest of your treatment can be tailored to what your skin needs today.

Customized Exfoliation

An exfoliation method chosen specifically for your skin — never a one-size-fits-all approach.

Extractions, Only If Appropriate

Extractions are offered when they will genuinely support your skin, and skipped when your skin needs gentleness instead.

Customized Mask

A mask selected for your skin's needs in the moment — hydrating, calming, clarifying, or nourishing.

Soothing Facial Massage

Relaxation-focused touch through the face, neck, and shoulders to help your nervous system soften alongside your skin.

Warm Towels & Aromatherapy

Warm towels and calming aromatherapy are woven in when appropriate, adding to the sensory experience.

Finishing Products & Home Care

Serums, eye care, moisturizer, and SPF chosen for your skin — plus simple home-care suggestions when they would be helpful.

Your facial is designed to be both results-focused and deeply relaxing — giving your skin meaningful support while allowing your nervous system a chance to settle.

Aftercare

First 24 Hours After Your Facial

A few simple do's and don'ts to help your skin settle in and get the most from your treatment.

Do

  • Drink extra water to support hydration
  • Use gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and moisturizer
  • Apply broad-spectrum SPF before heading outside
  • Let your skin breathe — go makeup-free if you can
  • Sleep on a clean pillowcase tonight
  • Use only the products recommended at the end of your facial

Don't

  • Don't apply retinol, AHAs, BHAs, or other strong actives
  • Skip waxing, threading, or any other facial treatments
  • Avoid hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, and hot yoga
  • No intense workouts or heavy sweating for the rest of the day
  • Don't touch, pick, or scrub your skin
  • Skip direct, prolonged sun exposure and tanning

If anything feels off in the days after your facial — unusual redness, breakouts, or sensitivity — please reach out so we can adjust your next treatment together.

Aftercare Continued

Days 2–3 After Your Facial

Your skin is settling and starting to show its results. Keep your routine simple and supportive for another 48 hours.

Use & Do

  • Continue with gentle cleanser and a fragrance-free moisturizer
  • Apply broad-spectrum SPF every morning, even indoors near windows
  • Add a hydrating serum like hyaluronic acid if your skin feels tight
  • Drink plenty of water and prioritize sleep
  • Reintroduce your favorite calming products (niacinamide, peptides, ceramides)
  • Re-apply SPF before any outdoor activity

Still Avoid

  • Hold off on retinol, AHAs, BHAs, and vitamin C until day 4
  • Skip exfoliating tools, scrubs, and cleansing brushes
  • Avoid waxing, threading, dermaplaning, and at-home peels
  • No tanning beds, intense sun exposure, or chlorinated pools
  • Don't try brand-new products you haven't patch tested
  • Resist picking, squeezing, or over-touching your skin

By day four, most clients can return to their full skincare routine. If your skin still feels sensitive, give it another day or two before reintroducing actives.

After Your Visit

Your Take-Home Plan

At the end of your facial, I'll write down a simple at-home routine tailored to your skin. Here's the structure of what you can expect to leave with.

Choose your skin type

Oily T-zone, normal-to-dry cheeks

Step 1 · Morning & Evening

Balanced Gel-Cream Cleanser

A gentle gel-cream cleanser that respects drier cheeks while still clearing oil from the T-zone.

Avoid harsh foaming washes — they push combination skin further out of balance.

Step 2 · Morning & Evening

Lightweight Lotion Moisturizer

A water-gel or lotion with niacinamide and hyaluronic acid — light enough for the T-zone, hydrating enough for cheeks.

Layer a richer cream only on dry areas if needed.

Step 3 · Every Morning

Lightweight SPF 30+

A satin-finish broad-spectrum sunscreen that wears comfortably across both oily and dry zones.

Reapply every 2 hours outdoors.

Optional

Add-Ons We May Suggest

  • BHA toner on the T-zone only, 2 evenings per week
  • Hydrating serum on cheeks before moisturizer
  • Niacinamide serum all over for balance
  • Weekly multi-mask: clay on T-zone, hydrating on cheeks

Your written plan stays simple on purpose — three core steps you'll actually do, with optional add-ons only if and when your skin is ready. Snap a photo of the card before you leave so it's always with you.

Before You Arrive

Allergy & Medication Checklist

A few questions to think through before your appointment. Sharing this information helps me tailor your facial safely and choose ingredients that support — not stress — your skin.

Allergies & Sensitivities

Even mild reactions are worth mentioning so we can avoid certain ingredients during your treatment.

  • Any known skincare or cosmetic ingredient allergies?
  • Reactions to fragrance, essential oils, or preservatives?
  • Food allergies that include nuts, soy, dairy, honey, or oats?
  • Latex sensitivity?
  • Sun sensitivity or history of heat-triggered flushing?
  • Any allergies to common topicals like aloe, cinnamon, or witch hazel?

Medications & Supplements

Some prescriptions and supplements affect how your skin responds to exfoliation, extractions, and active ingredients.

  • Currently using retinoids (tretinoin, Retin-A, Differin, Accutane)?
  • Antibiotics, oral or topical, including doxycycline or minocycline?
  • Hormonal medications, birth control changes, or HRT?
  • Blood thinners (aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, vitamin E)?
  • Steroids — oral, topical, or recent injections?
  • High-dose vitamin A, biotin, or other skin-active supplements?

Recent Skin History

Recent treatments and skin changes shape what's safe and most beneficial for your facial today.

  • Any chemical peels, lasers, microneedling, or injectables in the last 4 weeks?
  • Recent waxing, threading, or hair removal in the treatment area?
  • Sunburn, windburn, or significant sun exposure recently?
  • Active cold sores, open breakouts, or skin infections?
  • Pregnant, nursing, or trying to conceive?
  • Any new skincare products started in the past two weeks?

You don't need to fill out a form ahead of time — just review these questions and share anything relevant during your consultation. When in doubt, mention it.

  • Hale & Hush products designed specifically for sensitive, reactive, and post-procedure skin
  • Fragrance-free, essential-oil-free formulas whenever needed
  • Enzymes instead of acids for gentle exfoliation
  • Cool, calming masks instead of warming or stimulating treatments

  • Patch testing of new actives before using them across the face

Always let me know about new products, prescriptions, recent procedures, or anything that's been irritating your skin so we can plan accordingly.

Ingredient Transparency

Common Actives & How They're Chosen

A closer look at the active ingredients I reach for most often, what they do, and how I match strength and frequency to your skin's sensitivity.

Hyaluronic Acid

Holds water in the skin for plump, hydrated, supple comfort.

Sensitive skin

Used freely — well tolerated and barrier-supporting.

Normal / resilient skin

Layered with other actives to deepen hydration and glow.

Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)

Calms redness, supports the barrier, and refines pores over time.

Sensitive skin

Started at 2–4% and patch tested if there's any reactivity.

Normal / resilient skin

Used at 5–10% as a workhorse for tone and clarity.

Vitamin C

Brightens tone, supports collagen, and adds antioxidant defense.

Sensitive skin

Gentler forms like sodium ascorbyl phosphate or THD ascorbate.

Normal / resilient skin

L-ascorbic acid at higher percentages for visible brightening.

Lactic Acid (AHA)

Gently exfoliates and hydrates while smoothing texture.

Sensitive skin

Low percentage, short contact time, paired with calming agents.

Normal / resilient skin

Higher percentage with longer contact for resurfacing.

Salicylic Acid (BHA)

Clears congestion inside the pore and supports oilier or breakout-prone skin.

Sensitive skin

Spot-treated only, or swapped for a gentler option like willow bark.

Normal / resilient skin

Used across breakout-prone areas to keep pores clear.

Mandelic Acid

A larger-molecule AHA — exfoliates slowly and evens tone with less irritation.

Sensitive skin

Often the first choice when other AHAs feel too strong.

Normal / resilient skin

Layered into peels for gradual brightening and texture work.

Enzymes (Pumpkin, Pineapple, Papaya)

Digest dead surface cells without abrasion or strong acids.

Sensitive skin

Primary exfoliation method — safe, gentle, and effective.

Normal / resilient skin

Used between stronger treatments to keep skin smooth.

Peptides

Signal the skin to support firmness, elasticity, and repair.

Sensitive skin

Excellent — soothing and rarely reactive.

Normal / resilient skin

Combined with retinol-friendly routines for long-term support.

Retinol

Speeds cell turnover, smooths texture, and softens fine lines over time.

Sensitive skin

Avoided in-treatment; gentle alternatives like bakuchiol suggested for home.

Normal / resilient skin

Discussed for home care; avoided 5–7 days before active treatments.

Zinc Oxide (Mineral SPF)

Sits on the skin and reflects UV — the gentlest broad-spectrum option.

Sensitive skin

First choice — non-reactive and barrier-supportive.

Normal / resilient skin

Used daily for protection without disrupting other actives.

Strength, percentage, and frequency are always adjusted in the room — never assumed. If an active doesn't suit your skin that day, we simply choose another.

At-Home Care

Patch Test & Face Map

Introducing new actives at home doesn't have to be guesswork. Use this simple patch-test method and face-map guide to help your skin accept new ingredients calmly.

How to Patch Test at Home

A 5-day rhythm to introduce one new product at a time, in one small spot, before it touches the rest of your face.

  1. 1

Day 1 — Choose your spot

Pick a small, discreet area: behind the ear, along the jawline, or the inside of your forearm. Cleanse the area gently and pat dry.

  2. 2

    Day 1–2 — Apply a small amount

Use a pea-sized amount of the new product on that spot only. Don't layer other actives there. Repeat once that evening.

  3. 3

Day 3 — Watch and wait

Leave the area alone and observe for redness, bumps, itching, or burning. No reaction so far is a good sign — keep going.

  4. 4

Day 4 — Test on the face

If your skin stays calm, apply a small amount to one cheek or the side of the chin only — not the full face yet.

  5. 5

    Day 5+ — Build slowly

If you still feel calm and comfortable, work the product into your routine 2–3 times a week, then build from there. Introduce only one new product at a time.

Stop and rinse if you notice

Burning, stinging beyond the first minute, persistent redness, swelling, itching, or small bumps. Wait 7 days before retrying — and reach out if you'd like help.

Face Map: Where to Apply What

Different zones of the face have different needs. Use this map as a starting point when you're applying or layering actives at home.

  • Forehead

    Often oilier, breakout-prone

Best for: Gentle BHAs, niacinamide, lightweight hydration.

Go gentle: Heavy occlusives that can trap oil and trigger congestion.

  • T-Zone (Nose & Center)

    Most active oil glands

Best for: Salicylic acid, clay masks, mattifying serums when needed.

Go gentle: Overusing strong actives daily — alternate with calming nights.

  • Cheeks

    Driest, most reactive area

Best for: Hyaluronic acid, ceramides, peptides, gentle vitamin C.

Go gentle: Strong AHAs/BHAs without a buffering moisturizer underneath.

  • Under-Eye Area

    Thin, delicate, easily irritated

Best for: Eye-specific peptides, caffeine, and fragrance-free hydration.

Go gentle: Retinol, acids, and essential oils unless formulated for eyes.

  • Around the Mouth & Chin

Hormonal breakouts and dryness can overlap

Best for: Targeted spot treatments and barrier-supporting moisturizer.

Go gentle: Layering multiple actives here — it's a frequent irritation hotspot.

  • Neck & Décolleté

    Thinner skin that ages quickly

Best for: Daily SPF, peptides, and gentle hydration extended downward.

Go gentle: Skipping SPF — this area shows sun damage faster than the face.

Bring any new product you're unsure about to your next appointment — we can patch test it together and make sure it fits the rest of your routine.
